WHAT IS BODEGAS FAMILIARES DE RIOJA?
- Non-profit association, founded in April 1991.
- Currently brings together a group of around forty family-run wine producing companies.
- With their own vineyards: a total of more than 3,000 hectares of their own and worked vines.
- We represent 70% of the social interests of stakeholders in terms of Rioja family-run winemaking concerns.
- Members of the Consejo Regulador D.O.Ca. RIOJA and the Interprofessional Wine organisation.
- Also characterised as being the perfect blend of youth in the management teams of their bodegas and the experience of the previous generations.
- One of our priority aims: to support the continuation of winemaking in the region as family businesses. Survival of the rural economy through youth.

IN ADDITION...
We are the sole point of reference for all the family bodegas in Rioja
- The second association in importance within the Designation of Origin in terms of number of bodegas.
- The only one in the D.O. totally made up of producers with their own vineyards.
- Pioneers in representing the family-run Spanish bodega in a European Confederation: there are currently 3,500 small and medium-sized wine producing companies in Spain. It is Rioja which is fronting this initiative.
- True image of Winemaking Rioja, led by young people – a guarantee for the continuity of the sector.
Our strategy of association is based on support and personalised and global counselling
for the family-run Rioja bodega, with special emphasis on promotional material: the basis for the launch and boost for winemaking concerns – the “Bodegas Familiares de Rioja” umbrella
At international level, we head the presence of the family-run Rioja bodega in different wine
policy forums, and also in representation of SPANISH FAMILY-RUN BODEGAS: Unique in Spain, transmitting the characteristic RIOJA quality criteria: significant participation in the
European Confederation of Family-run Winemaking Businesses -CEVI-, made up of more than 210,000 family winemakers.
Some of the issues currently being dealt with:
- Active, direct intervention in the CMO for Wine representing the family bodega, in defence of the interests of La Rioja.
- Lobbying excise duties on wine sales
- European Parliament
- Structuring of the European Confederation: in favour of greater support for the European family-run winemaking businesses.
- Enotourism in family wineries: International speeches about the model in La Rioja, as well as fruitful collaboration between sectors and Government
- Debate forums and progress in the European Family Winery: it is also an ideal channel for spreading information of interest for the region, such as the WORLD WINE FORUM, internationally to over 210,000 European wineries…
(our European definition)
“ Bodegas Familiares de Rioja: the hand by which the land becomes wine”
"Because tending their vines, making their wine and stamping their identity on the bottle with their knowledge, the family Winery is the only one which guarantees the continuation of the bond between the land and the product”
